RUSI MEMBERS ONLY: The Nigerian Army's Operation against Boko Haram
Despite concerted efforts by the Nigerian Army to retake Boko Haram strongholds in the north-east of Nigeria, the militant group still poses a major threat to the security of Nigeria and its people. In this address Lt Gen Tukur Yusuf Buratai will provide an update on recent operations and the 'post-offensive stabilisation operations' against Boko Haram.
Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai assumed command as the 20th Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Nigerian Army on 16 July, 2015. He is an accomplished Infantry officer and has held a range of command, administrative and instructional positions since his admission to the Nigerian Defence Academy Kaduna in 1981 as a member of the 29th Regular Combatant Course (29 RC).
Prior to his appointment as the Chief of Army Staff, he was Force Commander of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) from May 2015 and was previously appointed Director of Procurement at the Defence Headquarters in 2014.
General Buratai is noted for his beliefs that the solution to combatting the insurgency does not lie in military operations alone – he believes in the efficacy of the joint efforts of both the Nigerian military and civil population. He will expand on how his differing approach to leadership of the Nigerian Army has advanced the battle against Boko Haram.
