Project Launch: Reviewing Effectiveness of Counter-Terrorism and Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism Activities

RUSI’s Terrorism and Conflict Research Group has conducted a systematic literature review, funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, looking at the effectiveness of counter-terrorism (CT) and efforts to prevent and counter violent extremism (P/CVE).  The aim is to identify what works and what does not, the preconditions for effective programmes, their underlying assumptions, but also the existing evidence gaps. We focused on three subject areas: interventions aimed at youth engagement, rehabilitation and reintegration, and capacity building of national governments and law enforcement agencies.

Donors supporting overseas CT and P/CVE interventions are under increasing pressure to demonstrate positive outcomes, value for money, and the existence of a broader accountability framework to their taxpayers. Our project builds on other work completed by RUSI’s Terrorism and Conflict Research Group investigating the evidence base for P/CVE programming in different contexts, with the aim of helping to construct an even more complete picture of the current situation, as well as identifying what can be further accomplished.

The project’s authors will present the findings and recommendations.

The event will be chaired by Onno Koopmans, Government of the Netherlands, Regional P/CVE Coordinator East Africa

A part of this event will consist of an interactive discussion on how the findings and recommendations can be put into practice.
