Peace in our time? A conversation with Dr Saeb Erekat
The Palestinian people are still without a state, and the peace process with Israel has not moved forward in years. A proposed “Deal of the Century” launched by the US Administration has been much talked about, but very little information has as to the parameters of this deal exist. The Palestinians face increasing economic pressure from the United States, but appear uninterested in supporting the deal. Dr Saeb Erekat will discuss these issues, and address the position of the Palestinian people toward the deal in the context of wider regional challenges.
The event will be chaired by Sir Malcolm Rifkind.
Dr. Saeb Erekat is currently the Secretary-General of the Palestine Liberation Organization, a PLO Executive Committee member and the Chief Palestinian Negotiator of the Negotiations Affairs Department. In 1991, Dr. Erekat was the Deputy Head of the Palestinian delegation to the Madrid Peace Process and later during the Washington negotiations of 1992. In 1994, he was appointed the Chairman of the Palestinian delegation for negotiations and then Head of the Palestinian negotiations team leading negotiations with Israel .
