RUSI is hosting a discussion with James Kirchick, fellow at the Foreign Policy Institute in Washington, about his new book on the challenges Europe is facing to the liberal, democratic values it holds dear.

Once the world’s bastion of liberal, democratic values, Europe now has to confront demons it thought it had laid to rest. The old pathologies of anti-Semitism, populist nationalism, and territorial aggression are threatening to tear the European post-war consensus apart. Whether that is the ‘Brexit’ vote in the UK, the migrant crisis exacerbating tensions between Europeans and their Muslim minorities, the rising anti-Semitism across the continent or Russian imperialism on the eastern edges, Europe is facing unprecedented challenges. The ultimate crisis may be posed by President Trump, who has threatened to abandon America’s traditional role as upholder of the liberal world order and guarantor of the continent's security.

James Kirchick, the author of The End of Europe, a Fellow at the Foreign Policy Initiative in Washington and correspondent for the Daily Beast, will speak about the unexpected and disturbing challenges facing Europe, from within or external threats.  After some short remarks by the author there will be an opportunity for a full and open discussion with the audience.
