RUSI is hosting Dr Agnia Grigas, non-resident Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council, for a discussion on Russia’s foreign policy in 2018, in an update to her 2016 award-winning book Beyond Crimea: The New Russian Empire.

In 2016 Dr Agnia Grigas asked how Russia will redraw post-Soviet borders in the wake of Russian expansionism. In Beyond Crimea: The New Russian Empire Dr Grigas illustrated how —for more than two decades—Moscow has consistently used its compatriots in bordering nations for its territorial ambitions. Demonstrating how this policy has been implemented in Ukraine and Georgia, Grigas analysed the nature of Vladimir Putin’s foreign policy and ‘compatriot protection’ to warn that Moldova, Kazakhstan, the Baltic States, and others are also at risk.

Two years on, Dr Grigas’s book is as relevant as ever. She will speak about Russian’s foreign policy in 2018, considering the developments since the election of President Trump, the re-election of President Putin in March 2018, and the changing political and security situation in the Baltics and other post-Soviet states.

Dr Agnia Grigas is an energy and political risk expert. Currently, she is a non-resident Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council in Washington DC and a non-resident Senior Fellow at the McKinnon Center for Global Affairs at Occidental College in Los Angeles.
