JIIA-RUSI-CSIS Joint Open Seminar on Maritime Security in the East and South China Seas
Download the conference programme
Featuring overlapping territorial claims, disputes over maritime law, and suspicion caused by rising military expenditure and geopolitical tension, the disputes in the East and South China Seas are multilayered and complex.
While overt tensions between Japan and China in the East China Sea have subsided over the past eighteen months, China’s claim to sovereignty over the Senkaku Islands remains outstanding, and both sides are yet to agree on a crisis management agreement to mitigate dangerous at-sea encounters. In the South China Sea, tensions have risen considerably in recent months as Beijing has pursued a programme of land reclamation in disputed waters, and engaged in tough verbal sparring with Washington over the freedom of the US Navy to operate in international waters.
The event will bring together leading experts from the UK, Japan, US, Vietnam, the Philippines, and will be open to all.
Registration will be from 1330, with the conference to commence at 1400.
