This event will explore how big data could be used to enhance strategic and tactical aspects of policing.

In recent years, the rise of big data analytics has revolutionised the domains of retail, healthcare, insurance, fraud detection and countless more. Similarly, if used effectively, big data has the potential to transform many aspects of policing. In the coming years, as sophisticated technologies become available at increasingly low cost, effective use of big data analytics will become a key priority for the police and other law enforcement agencies.

Until now, there has been only limited research exploring the use of big data for policing. The purpose of the research project is to better understand the ways in which big data analytics could be used to enhance different aspects of policing, allowing officers and staff to do their jobs more efficiently and more effectively.
Drawing directly from policing expertise and experience, this workshop aims to explore how big data could be used to enhance the strategic and tactical aspects of policing, identify potential challenges, and discuss the ways in which technology can support policing in the future.

This workshop will be split into three sessions. The first session will explore the use of big data analytics to support police investigations. In the second session, discussion will focus on the use of big data analytics in developing strategy, understanding crime patterns and formulating appropriate responses. The third session will explore the ethical and legal issues concerning big data analytics, including a guest presentation from academic experts in the field.

This event is by invitation only. For more information, please contact Lieke Bos at LiekeB@rusi.org
