The long-awaited publication of the Integrated Review of the UK’s Defence, Security, Development and Foreign Policy marks a significant step in the country’s new life outside the European Union. In charting this radical new direction, this Review can be compared in significance to Labour’s Strategic Defence Review of 1998, published near the start of its 13-year period in office.

But how adequate is the Review in addressing today’s challenges? And what are its implications for the UK’s military posture?

Professor Malcolm Chalmers and Lord Ricketts discuss these and additional questions in a debate marking the publication of a new RUSI report analysing the Review.

Professor Malcolm Chalmers is Deputy Director-General of RUSI. He has been an Adviser to Parliament’s Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy since 2012, and was Senior Special Adviser to Foreign Secretaries Jack Straw and Margaret Beckett.

Lord Ricketts was the UK's first National Security Adviser and Permanent Under-Secretary at the FCO. He oversaw the National Security Strategy and Strategic Defence Review in 2010.
