Future Challenges in Economic Crime: A View from the SFO

08 October 2020, 14:00
Invite Only
This event provides an opportunity to hear from SFO Director Lisa Osofsky with a review of the SFO’s work and future priorities; and the economic crime landscape in the UK and internationally.

RUSI’s Centre for Financial Crime and Security Studies is delighted to welcome back the Director of the Serious Fraud Office (SFO), Lisa Osofsky, for a discussion of the SFO’s current work and future priorities.  Ms Osofsky joined the SFO in August 2018, bringing with her over 30 years of experience pursuing and protecting against financial crime, in both the public and private sectors in both the UK and the US.

Over the past two years, the SFO has been adapting its working processes and systems to ensure it is fully able to meet the challenges faced in tackling serious economic crime in an increasingly technological era and make the UK a safer place to do business.  This includes expanding its intelligence capacity, enhancing its cooperation with UK and International partners, reducing unnecessary delays in progressing casework and harnessing technology to keep pace with the increasing amounts of data involved in criminal investigations.

It has also shown itself to be a world leader in terms of making the best use of new legislative tools developed to tackle corporate crime, such as the Bribery Act and Deferred Prosecutions Agreements (DPA), and has agreed a number of high-profile DPAs in the past year alone, including the record-breaking agreement which the French PNF, the SFO and the US Department of Justice reached with Airbus earlier this year, involving a 3.6bn euro global settlement.

As well as considering the SFO’s current work and future priorities, Ms Osofsky will also provide her assessment of the developing economic crime landscape in the UK and internationally and consider the ways in which this is likely to shape the SFO’s path ahead.
