Extreme Communication: Strategic Communications in the Contemporary International Landscape
The RUSI Journal special issue on Strategic Communications tackles how the communications activities of state and non-state actors are among the most complex and challenging security concerns facing Western liberal democracies today.
The challenge comes from extremist actors ranging from the Islamic State to far-right organisations, and their increasingly sophisticated use of tools and approaches both online and offline.
In this online event, guest editor Alastair Reed spoke to contributing authors Maura Conway, Nafees Hamid and
- Maura Conway is Professor of International Security at the School of Law and Government at Dublin City University, Ireland and the Coordinator of VOX-Pol.
- Nafees Hamid is a Fellow at Artis International, an Associate Fellow at the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism – The Hague and a Bonnart Trust PhD candidate in Security and Crime Science at University College London. His research includes interviews, surveys, psychology and neuroscience experiments with violent extremists and their broader communities.
- Alastair Reed is an Associate Professor at the Cyber Threats Research Centre (CYTREC) at Swansea University in the UK and at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Netherlands. He is also an Associate Fellow at RUSI and the Director of the Research Advisory Council at the RESOLVE Network.
