RUSI Whitehall
Major Corporate Level Members and Above
An exclusive breakfast briefing with The Lord Evans of Weardale KCB DL, Distinguished Fellow, RUSI and former Director General of the British Security Service (MI5).

Recent research suggests that business leaders now see cyber security as the top risk to their businesses, and the British Government has publicly stated that cyber is one of only three top tier threats to the UK’s national security.

Lord Evans will draw on his wide experience of countering cyber risk. He was one of the British Government’s principal advisors on national security, as Director General of the Security Service from 2007 to 2013, and a Non-Executive Director of HSBC Holdings from 2013 to 2019, where he led the Board’s oversight of cyber risk. He has also been an advisor to leading British cyber AI company Darktrace, since it was founded in 2013, and currently sits on the Risk Committee of KPMG UK.

In this briefing, Lord Evans will share his current view of the threats posed by both criminal and state actors, his views on appropriate responses both by government and companies, and his assessment of how this threat area is likely to develop in the next few years.

The Lord Evans of Weardale KCB DL is a Distinguished Fellow of RUSI. He was Director General of the British Security Service (MI5) from 2007 to 2013. As head of MI5, he was one of the British Government’s principal advisors on national security threats and was a member of the Prime Minister’s National Security Council. He also led MI5’s work to ensure the safety and security of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in London. In the course of a long and varied career in MI5, he worked as both an investigator and an operational officer on a variety of national security threats, specialising in counter-terrorism. He became the director responsible for MI5’s International Counter-Terrorism work on 1 September 2001, ten days before 9/11. He was appointed as Chair of the Committee on Standards in Public Life on 25 October 2018 for a five-year term. Lord Evans is also a school governor of a state secondary school, Chair of the Kent Search and Rescue charity and a Deputy Lieutenant of Kent.
