Breakfast Briefing: Is Electricity our Single Point of Failure - Protecting Critical Infrastructure

15 June 2018, 8:15
RUSI Whitehall
Invite Only
An exclusive breakfast briefing by Lord Harris of Haringey, UK Co-ordinator, Electric Infrastructure Security (EIS) Council and The Rt Hon the Lord Arbuthnot of Edrom, Advisor, EIS Council and Member of the Advisory Board, RUSI.

Today’s interconnected infrastructure, resource and service networks, and the global-scale supply chains they depend on, have brought us capabilities unlike anything seen in history. Our societies, economies and lives now depend on multi-sector, global networks that have evolved with no parallel, system-wide security processes to protect them. Last year’s unprecedented international cyber-attacks, explicit electromagnetic pulse threats from North Korea and recent revelations of other nation-state attacks on utilities underscored this societal vulnerability, highlighting infrastructure security as one of the most important challenges facing our world.

Central to all those utilities is the electricity network and the dependencies of all the others that rely on it to function. In this briefing, Lord Arbuthnot and Lord Harris will discuss the need for preparedness and resilience in the event of a major, prolonged wide-area power outage. They will discuss the need to build an understanding of the inter-sectoral dependencies, a set of plans to reduce the vulnerabilities arising out of those dependencies and a programme of cross-sector exercises of those plans to ensure that they work.

These briefings are open to Major Corporate Level Members and above.

Please note that places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Tea, coffee and pastries will be available from 0800.
