Breakfast Briefing: Business Security is National Security

20 February 2019, 8:15
RUSI Whitehall
Major Corporate Level Members and Above
An exclusive breakfast briefing with Elisabeth Braw, Associate Fellow, Modern Deterrence, RUSI.

We frequently hear about attacks on major companies: cyber-attacks against banks, attempted sabotage of grids and power plants, to mention but a few. Companies make valiant efforts to defend themselves against such attacks, and doing so is of course a commercial imperative. Attacks on companies are being used as a way of weakening a country and we should treat such attacks not solely as a commercial concern but as a national security issue as well.

In this briefing, Elisabeth will focus on how companies are often targeted as part of a larger campaign of non-traditional warfare. She will discuss how attacks on the private sector are a central part of the hybrid warfare that is being waged against Western societies by governments such as Russia. Today, corporate security is national security.

Elisabeth Braw is an Associate Fellow of RUSI. She directs the Modern Deterrence programme, which focuses on how governments, business and civil society can work together to strengthen our defence against existing and emerging threats. Prior to RUSI, she worked at Control Risks following a career as a journalist where she reported from the United States, Germany, Italy and other countries. She remains a contributor to The Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, Foreign Policy and Politico, focusing on European defence and security, and frequently speaks at conferences. Elisabeth has also been a Visiting Fellow at the University of Oxford. A native of Sweden, she attended university in Germany, finishing her Magister Artium degree in political science and German literature with a dissertation on nuclear weapons reduction in Europe.
