The Security and the North Sea Conference
The North Sea is one of Europe’s vital arteries for trade as well as being the location of some key natural resources including food and energy for the countries that border it. In the era of returning state competition its linkages to other maritime areas including the Baltic and North Atlantic emphasise its continuing strategic importance. From oil platforms, through wind farms and pipelines to fishing grounds and the presence of Russian naval and air forces, the North Sea is an area of vital interest to the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Norway and the UK. It is unclear at this stage what the impact of Brexit might be on security more broadly and in the North Sea in particular.
The aim will be to establish a dialogue between interested parties from both the public and private sectors and identify key areas that need further study.
Attendance will include policy makers from the governments of the Netherlands, the UK, Belgium, Germany, Denmark and Norway including defence and security officials as well as those working in energy, fisheries, crime and environment.
A RUSI-authored short conference report identifying key areas for further study will be released following the conference.
