RUSI's Strategic Plan 2008-13
RUSI's Strategic Plan identifies the Institute's objectives and charts its direction for the next five years.
The continued success of RUSI depends on a clear strategy for building on the traditions of the past and our excellent reputation.
The new Strategic Plan specifies the central objectives intrinsic to RUSI and affirms the manner in which goals and targets relating to these aspects will be met, indicating the best path forward for the Institute.
This strategy will:
Emphasise, and demonstrate, research-led activity
RUSI's research programmes will reflect its ability to marry traditional analysis and its background in military history with current concerns in the defence and security fields. It defines defence and security matters widely and builds new, authoritative research ideas on the foundations of its long-standing studies of military and defence affairs over nearly two centuries.
RUSI undertakes many activities and has the flexibility to address a number of issues as they arise. Within two years, at least 50 per cent of all the activity it undertakes - meetings, publications, other events and electronic outreach - should derive from, or be connected to, the Institute's mainstream research activities.
Focus on quality
Intellectual and administrative quality is essential to all RUSI's activities. Only through demonstrable excellence can a research-led institution achieve and maintain the status of a world class think tank in a modern, highly competitive environment.
Emphasise the policy relevance of all RUSI work
RUSI's natural comparative advantage as a policy institution will be emphasised. RUSI will compete at the highest intellectual levels of analyses on defence and security matters, but will specialise in distilling them into policy relevant outputs.
Position RUSI to maximise added value to its members and to the wider security community
RUSI will exploit its enviable position in providing access to a nexus of institutions in British government, the Armed Forces, foreign governments and officials, business and industry. Its research strategy will emphasise the advantages of attaining and exploiting this position as a think tank in such a changing environment. With its institutional base and its wide range of different activities RUSI intends to be a 'one-stop shop' for all aspects of British security policy analysis and for many aspects of international political and military studies.
Reinforce strong long-standing relationships with all major partners with whom RUSI works
RUSI's ability to network across different areas is unparalleled and will be bolstered by efforts to maintain strong and enduring relations with key partners and clients. Its commitment to free and open debate is an enduring link to a spectrum of political partners and a basis on which to build new partnerships.
