Maritime Studies Programme

The Maritime Studies Programme is a research-led programme which provides analysis, conducts research, contributes to RUSI’s publications, and convenes meetings, seminars and conferences on issues relating to the maritime operational environment and maritime security, including development, concepts and doctrine, military capabilities, personnel, moral and legal issues (including reserves), command and force structures and organization, and logistics.

The programme focuses on the use of the sea for military purposes, and examines how policy shapes military strategy in the maritime environment. The programme focuses too on the requirements for the use of maritime forces, the capabilities which underpin these requirements, and the industrial base designed to deliver these capabilities.

The programme also tackles RUSI media work relating to maritime strategy and capabilities, with commentary in the past on issues such as the Russian submarine Kursk and on the Trafalgar 200 bicentennial celebrations, and more recent written and broadcast commentary focusing on: the maritime contribution to combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq; on the UK's Future Carrier (CVF) programme; on the UK's debate surrounding the replacement of its independent strategic nuclear deterrent; the UK's ASTUTE-class submarine programme; and on the future of the Royal Navy. The Maritime Studies Programme also provides lecturing support for University courses: recently, RUSI staff have taught at the University of Greenwich.

The Programme works closely with defence ministries, industry and other stakeholders in its research and in organizing a range of events. Here, the Programme is keen to expand its contacts across the board to promote the discussion of maritime issues.
