US-Syria relations continue to be strained, and Obama's decision to extend sanctions in light of the Syrian failure to come clean on its nuclear programme will only serve to ramp up mutual suspicion. Syria's proximity to key regional players means it could be an invaluable long-term ally; but can the West handle the company Damascus keeps?
