Peace on the ‘Second Front’?

The success of Obama’s troop surge in Afghanistan may hang in the balance, whilst Pakistan slides from one crisis to the next. Somalia and Yemen appear poised as the next frontier of Islamist terrorism, leaving Western analysts and planners scratching their heads about how to deal with a threat that morphs easily between theatres, expertly utilises modern technology and the global media, and has developed an ability to cultivate grassroots support amongst aggrieved populations. Yet on another front of the US-led ‘Overseas Contingency Operation’ (formerly known as ‘The Global War on Terror’), there are grounds for cautious optimism.
