Preserving Democracy: Parliamentary Scrutiny of EU Security and Defence Policy

Most people have talked of the implementation of the Lisbon Treaty without necessarily having a clear view as to how its clauses and protocols would actually be applied. This is especially true when it comes to accountability – who is accountable to whom and for what? Take parliamentary oversight of European security and defence policy, where national parliaments are at risk of losing much of their responsibility for overseeing many Treaty provisions, cutting off the vital link with public opinion.
