The Forthcoming Sri Lankan Elections: Ethnic Minority Prospects

Regional and international attention has once again been cast on Sri Lanka as the island prepares to hold its first presidential elections since ending one of the world’s bloodiest civil wars. The decision of former Sri Lankan Chief of Defence Staff General Sarath Fonseka to run against the incumbent President Mahindra Rajapaske has invigorated interest in the elections. With the nationalist vote split between Sri Lanka’s two war heroes, concessions will have to be made to Sri Lanka’s ethnic minorities – currently marginalised from post-war reconstruction – in order for either side to secure victory. In an ironic twist the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), who backed the Tamil Tigers during the civil war, has now pledged its support to the general who orchestrated their defeat.
