The PLA in 2010: Adventurism or Introspection?

2009 was a year of fanfare for China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA). As the sentinel of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and guardian of the masses, the PLA was at the core of the People’s Republic’s sixtieth anniversary. The PLA Navy’s fleet review and the enormous military parade in Beijing left the world in no doubt of the growing clout of China’s armed forces. Now that the party is over, China’s Central Military Commission (CMC), led by its Chairman Hu Jintao, is faced with the difficult task of continuing the reform and modernisation of the PLA. The aim is to meet CCP goals in time for the 18th Party Congress in 2012, when China’s next generation of leadership will emerge from behind the red curtain in the Great Hall of the People.
