Yemen: Approach with Caution

Nigerian student Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab’s failed attempt to bomb Northwest Airlines flight 253 on Christmas Day 2009 has catapulted Yemen to the forefront of the counter-terrorism agenda. As a result, Western governments added the Gulf nation to a growing list of states identified as containing a significant Al-Qa’ida presence. Yemen has been heralded as the ‘next front’ in the War on Terror; as one US official in the Yemeni capital quipped:
"Iraq is yesterday’s war; Afghanistan is today’s war. If we do not act pre-emptively, Yemen will be tomorrow’s war. That is the danger we face."
