Nine years later, Sir Julian Corbett called it ‘perhaps the most decisive and complete naval victory in history…Not once in our most successful war had we obtained a command of the sea so nearly absolute as that which Japan now enjoyed’. He even doubted whether ‘such an uncontrolled sway’ would ever be won again.
