He became a much-maligned character in the historiography in later decades. But contrary to the prevalent caricature, Haig actually spent the post-war years labouring on behalf of his men. He was instrumental in the founding of The Royal British Legion, and lobbied ceaselessly for better treatment for veterans of all rank and class.
