Editorial Review
All submissions to the RUSI Journal are carefully reviewed, both internally and externally.
All pieces submitted to the RUSI Journal are subject to a first screening by the Editor and/or Director of Publications. Submissions are then anonymised and presented to the internal RUSI Editorial Board, which is made up of the Institute's senior researchers and which meets every two months. The decision and any applicable feedback is then presented to the author within four weeks of the meeting.
In addition, to maintain the highest standards and encourage submissions based on original research the RUSI Journal has instituted a distinctive peer review process for selected articles.
These designated articles will be subject to two external (ie, non RUSI staff) peer reviewers, using anonymised texts and reporting back to an internal reviewer, also working with an anonymised text, prior to a final decision by the full editorial board. If published, such articles will be identified in the Journal by a distinctive RUSI asterisk in the top left corner of the opening page.
This new policy will be applied at the discretion of the Editorial Board, which will base its decision on various criteria, including but not limited to: the time-sensitivity of the article; the wishes of the author; and/or whether the content is suitable for such a review.
The articles can appear anywhere in the Journal; be of any length or format; and there is no set number of peer-reviewed articles per issue.
