Faced with a black hole in the public finances on a scale unmatched in peacetime, much of the public would put defence high on the hitlist for cuts. The upcoming General Election is an important opportunity for the parties to communicate their plans for defence policy to a disillusioned and sceptical electorate. Despite predicted cuts to the Ministry of Defence's budget it is vital that Britain will no longer try to do defence on the cheap, but will aim to meet better-defined objectives more efficiently.
