For weary Zimbabweans doing the rounds of trying to find food, water, shelter, petrol and cash, one question dominated conversation in August 2008: ‘Is there a deal yet?’ Invariably the answer came back: ‘No deal’. The power-sharing talks between ZANU-PF, the Tsvangirai MDC and the Mutambara MDC had stalled, with neither Robert Mugabe nor Morgan Tsvangirai willing to sign a deal which relegates either man to junior partner status.
