Defence Review papers reassess UK strategy

Britain faces hard strategic choices in the immediate future regardless of what cuts are made to the defence budget, according to the latest RUSI paper in the Future Defence Review series - making it necessary for political leaders to outline a clear vision for using British armed forces around the world.

A Force for Honour: Military Strategic Options for the United Kingdom argues that Britain must reappraise the 'fundamental propositions' that define its global strategy, presenting five different scenarios for adapting the UK's military posture to both the current affordability crisis and the security challenges of the future.

Future Defence Review: Options for British Security

The UK Government has announced plans for a new Future Defence Review to be carried out at the next Parliament. The review will cover issues of procurement, expenditure and troop welfare in the British Armed Forces. In light of this, RUSI presents a series of Working Papers which open up the debate about defence policy and procedure.

Security reform critical for Zimbabwe, RUSI's first Africa paper warns


Zimbabwe's unity government must make reform of the army and police an urgent priority, a RUSI research paper has warned - the first to be published by the Institute on security in Africa.

Authored by Dr Knox Chitiyo, Head of RUSI's Africa programme, The case for security sector reform in Zimbabwe (PDF) presents a detailed strategy for converting Zimbabwe's armed forces into 'enablers' rather than 'spoilers' of the rule of law.

Launch of the Climate Security Research Project


Dr Tobias Feakin and Shiloh Fetzek’s visit to Central America marks the launch of a project to investigate the impact of climate change on security and stability in the region. As the effects of the changing climate become increasingly apparent, Mesoamerican governments join RUSI in discussions on the arising security implications.

General Sir Richard Dannatt Appointed RUSI Chairman

The Council of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) has elected General Sir Richard Dannatt as the Institute's new Chairman. General Dannatt will take over on 1 September 2009 when he retires, after 40 years in the Army, as Chief of the General Staff.
