About the event:

Bishop Stephn VennerA lecture by the Right Reverend Dr Stephen Venner DL, Bishop to HM Forces.

Christianity, together with the world's major religions, tells of a God whose desire is for his people to live at peace with one another. Yet throughout history there has been an active link between religion and war. As religious leaders have challenged political leaders to face the moral challenges of war and peace, some have opposed wars and warfare in the name of peace; others have encouraged nations to go to war, sometimes under the banner of God himself. Either way, chaplains have stood in the name of God alongside those affected by conflicts, both combatants and victims, irrespective of the rightness of the cause. In his lecture, Bishop Stephen Venner will explore some of these issues as they are reflected today, when war is still part of our experience, where people question any moral absolutes and faith itself is under fire.

The Right Reverend Dr Stephen Venner DL was the Bishop in Canterbury and Bishop of Dover, leading the Diocese of Canterbury on behalf of the Archbishop. He retired at the end of 2009 and is now, in retirement, Bishop to HM Forces and Bishop for the Falkland Islands. He served for 30 years as a parish priest in London, Wiltshire and Dorset and as Bishop of Middleton in Greater Manchester. He was the first Pro-Chancellor of Canterbury Christ Church University. Until recently, he was a senior member of Kent's Strategic Partnership and Chairman of Kent's Children's Trust. He is a Deputy Lieutenant of Kent and an Honorary Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Rochester.

An optional £10 sandwich lunch shall be available from 1215.
