About the event:

Major General Gordon MessengerA lecture by Major General Gordon Messenger DSO* OBE, Strategic Communications Officer, Ministry of Defence, UK.

In his lecture, Major General Messenger reflected on the challenges facing those leading joint operations in Southern Afghanistan at Brigade level.  As a recent British Commander of Task Force Helmand on Op HERRICK 9, he discussed how the joint approach across military, civilian, governmental and international lines is vital to the success of the mission in Afghanistan.

Major General Messenger DSO* OBE joined the Royal Marines in 1983.  After a range of junior officer appointments, predominantly in regimental service and including a one year mountain leader course, he attended Canadian Staff College in 1994.  He commanded 40 Commando Royal Marines from December 2001 to August 2003, which included operational tours to Afghanistan and Op TELIC 1.  Major General Messenger then commanded 3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines for their deployment to Afghanistan in September 2008, before assuming his current role as Strategic Communications Officer for the Ministry of Defence, focussing primarily on improving public awareness of the Afghanistan campaign.
