About the event:

RUSImotif smallAfter nearly two decades of modernisation, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has changed in its approach towards both domestic and foreign affairs.  Taiwan no longer faces a bellicose mass conscript army but rather one that has undergone considerable reform in recent years. Thanks to a recruitment drive for better educated candidates for its officer corps, and with more university graduates joining its ranks, the ‘new’ PLA poses a more complicated and multi-faceted challenge to Taiwan.

Professor Chong-pin Lin of the Graduate Institute of International Affairs and Strategic Studies at Taipei’s Tamkang University and a former senior national security adviser to Taiwan’s government will discuss the remarkable development of the ‘new’ PLA, its origins, and implications for cross strait relations.
