Lunch-Time Presentation: Six
Speaker: Commander Martin Connell, Former CO HMS Chatham, Royal Navy
Following last month’s analyses of ground operations, the next Frontline Insight will address the maritime frontline. Commander Martin Connell Royal Navy, former Commanding Officer of the Type 22 frigate HMS Chatham, conducted a high profile and highly successful deployment to the Persian Gulf between March and October 2008.
During the operation, Chatham and her crew tackled a range of maritime security tasks including: securing the Iraqi oil infrastructure in the Northern Gulf; conducting counter-narcotics operations in the Gulf and the Arabian Sea; and engaging in anti-piracy operations off the coast of Somalia.
Such operations have strategic significance both for current joint operations ashore and for wider UK defence and security policy was a whole. This briefing will examine the issues and challenges in undertaking such tasks, as well as Chatham’s role in training the Iraqi Navy and her Commanding Officer’s analysis of the workings and complexities of multi-layered and multi-national command. It also will assess, in the context of UK contingent overseas commitments, the strategic importance of maritime operations in the region.
A sandwich lunch will be available from 1215-1300, with the presentation and subsequent discussion session from 1300-1430.
Individual registration fees are £20 (inc VAT). This includes a sandwich lunch, with 15% of the fee going to a charity of the speaker’s choice.
British Military personnel attend for free.
