A speech by:
Mr Hiroshi Watanabe
President and CEO, Japan Bank for International Cooperation
As the financial crisis erupted in the West, economies in the emerging world hoped to be shielded from its worst effects. Sadly, this has not happened. Stock markets in the developing world have plunged, currencies are under pressure and investors confidence remains under strain. Slowing consumer demand in America and Europe, as well as a fast drop in commodity prices, will squeeze developing countries even further. What are the long-term implications of current trends? And how should the financial sector respond to such developments? These are the questions which Mr Watanabe will address in his presentation.
Mr Watanabe’s speech is jointly hosted by the Japan Finance Corporation, the Japan Bank for International Cooperation and RUSI. Afterwards, there will be an opportunity to question both Mr Watanabe and his senior officials on their views about the broader political and economic implications from the current situation and their impact on emerging markets.
A graduate of Tokyo and Brown universities, Mr Watanabe has started his career in Japan’s Ministry of Finance. Since then, he has served in various positions, including those of Personal Secretary to the Minister, Director-General of the International Bureau, and Vice Minister of Finance, before assuming his current position as JBIC’s President and CEO in October this year.
