About the event:

Afghanistan: A Comprehensive Approach to Current Challenges

The Speech

Des Browne at RUSI (September 2006)

British troops, currently deployed in the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) - a UN-authorised, NATO-led mission - are continuing their intensive operations in Afghanistan.

As the Government has consistently made clear, this is a tough mission, against difficult opponents, but one which neither Britain nor the international community can afford to shirk. The expansion of the ISAF into the South and East remains critical to the ongoing stabilisation of Afghanistan, extending the authority of its Government across the whole country, and facilitating broader reconstruction efforts.

In his presentation, the Secretary of State addressed the current challenges facing British and other NATO forces on the ground, and outlined the comprehensive approach which the Alliance is pursuing in order to defeat the terrorists.
