Whichever way the current crisis in Gaza concludes, the role of Egypt will be central. A settlement between Israel and Hamas may not be successful. Nevertheless, it will presumably be better off than others in the past. Against this background, a great deal has been said of Egypt in the region and the potential role the country can play in ameliorating circumstances on the ground.

There has been much speculation in Europe surrounding President Obama’s future intentions for the ‘special relationship’ between the US and the UK and for transatlantic relations more generally. Barack Obama’s election was welcomed in Europe as signifying a complete break with the Bush administration’s allegedly unilateralist foreign policy. Many Europeans hope that Bush’s foreign and security policies represented a temporary departure from America’s liberal internationalist tradition.
Charles Kupchan disagrees. Far from representing an aberration, he argued that the Bush administration marked the end of the era in American foreign policy that married power with the pursuit of partnerships and legitimacy in international affairs.

It is a case of collaboration or bankruptcy.
