Conference: The Tenth RUSI Missile Defence Conference
09:00, 28 May 2009, RUSI
The Tenth RUSI Missile Defence Conference takes place at a critical juncture for the future of international missile defence. Enormous technical progress has been achieved in recent years, and many defensive weapon systems are in production and development. Countries as different as Israel and Japan have embraced the need for Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD), and concepts as varied as the Air Borne Laser and Aegis are being fielded or demonstrated. Yet, after eight years of strong support from a Republican Administration, a new political climate in the US may alter the picture.

Conference: Focus and Exit: An Alternative Strategy for the Afghan War
10:00, 26 Mar 2009, RUSI
Gilles Dorronsoro, a visiting scholar at the Carnegie Endowment, will present an alternative strategy for Afghanistan. Dorronsoro argues that the U.S. troops surge should focus on securing key cities, especially Kabul, and roads in order to strengthen Afghan institutions. Ultimately, this should create the conditions for a progressive combat troop withdrawal - the only realistic political strategy for the allies to de-conflict Afghanistan.
Conference: POSTPONED: Defence Acquisition Symposium 2009 - A New US Presidency: Prospects For Co-operation In Transatlantic Acquisition
09:00, 18 Mar 2009, RUSI
The US remains, by far, the biggest single customer for military hardware; a fact unlikely to change for some time, regardless of Barack Obama’s priorities for his new Administration. Nevertheless, security and procurement priorities may be re-assessed and, with them, the transatlantic debate over defence acquisition could be overhauled. The Defence Trade Co-operation Treaty is the most obvious route to improved transatlantic co-operation in defence acquisition; therefore, the incoming Administration’s stance on the treaty will be of particular interest to officials and industrialists on both sides of the Atlantic.
Conference: RUSI Alternative Energy and Sustainability Conference
09:00, 27 Feb 2009, RUSI
Recent dramatic changes in the price and security of supply of oil have driven a remarkable shift in military assumptions. Traditional dependence on hydrocarbons has risen rapidly on the agenda of military concerns and the effect on front line capability is now in question; however, the adoption of alternative energy technologies and practices into planning and operations remains a significant challenge.
Event: Afghanistan - Pakistan: Searching for a New Regional Balance
10:00, 26 Feb 2009, RUSI
The appointment of a new British Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, in the wake of the first regional tour of President Obama’s top envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, demonstrates a new transatlantic commitment to stability in South Asia. There has been acknowledgement that the solution to the Afghan conflict lies in finding a new regional balance. However, there remains a need for more analysis on the concrete political, military and diplomatic steps that the U.S. and its UK ally will need to take to deliver stability in the long term.

Event: RUSI Middle East Forum - Peace in the Wake of Gaza
13:00, 11 Feb 2009, RUSI
However the events in Gaza conclude, the future of Palestine’s statehood will remain uppermost in the minds of governments. But with the future of Hamas in suspended animation, the question remains as to whether President Abbas can unify Gaza and the West Bank once more and bring to the peace plan a sole representative Palestinian authority.
