The Swedish Commission on Military History (SCMH) will be visiting RUSI to deliver presentations on a unique collection of maps dating back to the 16th century held by the National Swedish War Archives, and also on the war of 1808-09 between Russia and Sweden. Despite having far-reaching consequences in Northern Europe, as a part of the Napoleonic wars, the Russian-Swedish war of 1808-09 is not too well known to a British audience.
Workshop: Whitehall Dialogue – The Carrier Conundrum

In his presentation, he will discuss the viability of the carrier programme in the context of the renewed debate over the UK's future foreign, defence and security needs, and the funds likely to be available to provide for them.

Event: Members’ Military History Lecture – Vietnam: The Helicopter Comes of Age

Ian Passingham will discuss the use of helicopters during the Vietnam War. He will draw upon a number of operations that demonstrated the battlefield helicopter’s potential and vulnerabilities, as well as the most salient lessons learned at that time. Finally, he will consider the legacy of the helicopter’s ‘coming of age’ in Vietnam for both current and future conflict.

The Obama administration has recently revised its Afghanistan strategy, with an emphasis on a US troop surge of 17,000 men, targeting of the Taleban and Al-Qa'ida leadership, and the need for a comprehensive regional approach including better co-ordination with Pakistan. The UK has also reviewed its policy towards Afghanistan and Pakistan in a similar light.

The Royal United Services Institute hosts an annual Global Leadership Forum with high level US and European speakers to examine US foreign policy, transatlantic relations and prospects for leadership in world politics. Last year’s forum convened during the American presidential campaign period. Entitled “America and the World Beyond 2008”, the two-day conference explored directions for US foreign policy in the post-Bush era. Key American foreign policy advisors spoke at the event alongside influential academics in the field. Discussions focused on climate change, global finance, the Middle East, weapons proliferation, the Atlantic Alliance and global health concerns.
