Dr Andrew Syk

Position: Visiting Research Fellow

Dr Andrew Syk is co-ordinator of www.rusi.org/militaryhistory. He is also a European Research Council Post-doctoral Fellow at the Centre for War Studies, University College Dublin. He completed his D.Phil in Modern History at Harris Manchester College, University of Oxford in 2009, having previously obtained a BA (Hons), First Class, at the University of Derby and a Masters (with distinction) at the University of Warwick.

Dr Syk is currently researching the role of state-sponsored paramilitary organisations within wider British Imperial policing after 1918, as part of the ERC-funded project on 'Paramilitary Violence in Europe after the Great War (1917-1923)'. He is particularly interested in the early growth of these units to counter nationalist insurgencies in Ireland, India, Palestine and Mesopotamia.

His doctoral thesis explored the British and Indian Army's campaign in Mesopotamia (Iraq) during the First World War and drew upon research from India and the United Kingdom. He is currently editing the papers of General Sir Stanley Maude for publication by the Army Records Society and is also preparing a chapter for publication in an edited volume on the history of the Indian Army during the First and Second World Wars. He has previously published in the RUSI Journal and History Today.
