Graham Jordan

Position: Associate Fellow

Graham Jordan CB graduated with a degree in Natural Sciences and Chemical Engineering from the University of Cambridge. He made his early career in the Ministry of Defence, analysing operational problems concerned with the Central Region of NATO, and receiving an M Tech degree in Operational Research from Brunel University.

In 1982, he moved to the Royal Aircraft Establishment Farnborough as head of the Air-to-Air weapons division, becoming head of Guided Weapons Department in 1985. In 1987, after the cancellation of the Nimrod AEW project, he led a study of defence procurement published as the 'Jordan, Lee, Cawsey' (or 'Learning from Experience') report. A post in the Treasury followed before returning to the MoD, becoming the two-star member of the Chief Scientific Adviser’s staff responsible for scrutinising equipment procurement proposals. In 1995, he set up a team in the Cabinet Office to advise Ministers on the way ahead for e-government in the UK, leading to a Green Paper in 1996, and a White Paper in 1998, He returned to MoD in 1997 as Science and Technology Director, responsible for delivering the defence S&T Programme and the professional head of 12,000 scientists and engineers. On retirement in 2003 he was made CB. 

He is the UK member of the NATO Science for Peace and Security Committee, is a member of the Register of the Defence Scientific Advisory Council, and was a UK representative on the European Security Research Advisory Board from 2005-2007.
