Dr John Louth

Position: Senior Research Fellow / Deputy Head, Defence, Industries and Society

Dr Louth is Deputy Head of the Defence Industries and Society Programme.  He was born in Plymouth to a Naval family, but disappointed all by serving for 16 years as an officer in the Royal Air Force working in the UK, Germany, the Middle East and Sierra Leone.  His first degree was in Politics and Law from Aberystwyth University whilst his Master's, with Distinction, was awarded by Bristol Business School, where he also won the Solomon Hare prize for best student. His PhD studies were undertaken at the Cardiff School of Management where he undertook research into the managerialist agenda of the UK Smart Acquisition initiative.

John has worked as a consultant and programme director extensively throughout the Defence Sector, employed by both the BMT Group and QinetiQ.  His work has included the audit and management assurance of aspects of the UK strategic deterrent, MoD and industry partnering initiatives within the air domain, and the development of Chemical Biological & Radiological protection and responses.  He has spent part of his career in the Middle East running separate national programmes to develop the indigenous industrial base in a number of Gulf states.  John has also worked as an advisor to the European Defence Agency on the development of pan-European procurement policies and practices.  His research interests are the interdependencies between Defence policies and wider industry, and the impact Defence industry has on society and the individual.
