Sir Ian Forbes

Position: Associate Fellow

Sir Ian Forbes KCB CBE retired from the Royal Navy in 2004.  He commanded four warships, including the Carrier Invincible, and was engaged in conflict and crisis operations off Iceland, the Falklands, in the Gulf and in the Adriatic.  As an Admiral, he served as the Chief of Staff to the High Representative in Sarajevo, as the Commander of the UK Battle Group, as the Commander of the Surface Flotilla, and as NATO's Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic.  In this appointment, he was also the Supreme Allied Commander for a period with responsibility for creating a new Strategic Command, the Allied Command Transformation.

 

Sir Ian is a Commander of the British Empire and a Knight Commander of the Bath. He was awarded the Queens Commendation for Valuable Service and was the first recipient of the the NATO Meritorious Medal. He is also a holder of the US Legion of Merit and is an Honorary Citizen of Norfolk, Virginia.   An Associate Fellow of the Royal United Services Institute,  and an alumnus of the Windsor Leadership Trust, he works as a Consultant and Mentor.   He is a Senior Executive Adviser to Booz and Company, the global consulting firm,  to Ergo Consulting in New York, and to Nimrod Group Ltd.   The Chairman of the Naval Review,  he is also the Chairman of Governors of Eastbourne College and St Andrews School. He recently acted as an Independent Adviser to the NATO Military Committee in a review of the NATO Command Structure.
