Euan Graham

Position: Associate Fellow

Dr Graham has been a close observer of East Asian security for more than twenty years, in academia, the private sector and for the British government. Longstanding research interests include maritime security, regional architecture and the Korean Peninsula.

From 2004 to 2010, Dr Graham was Senior Research Officer for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), serving initially as the Korean Peninsula and Japan analyst, then as head of the Southeast Asia and Pacific Research Section. Frontline diplomatic experience included periods as Chargé d'Affaires at the British Embassy in Pyongyang, and acting Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Manila.

Before joining the FCO, Dr Graham was Asia Editor/Analyst at the risk consultancy Oxford Analytica. He obtained a PhD in strategic studies from the Australian National University in 2003, where he was also involved in regional security dialogue, through the Council for Security Cooperation in Asia Pacific. In 2006, he authored 'Japan's Sea Lane Security 1940-2004: A Matter of Life and Death?', published by Routledge.

Dr Graham participated in RUSI delegations to Tokyo and Taipei in December 2010, and from February 2011 he will be based in Singapore, where he will take up a Senior Fellowship in Maritime Security at the Rajaratnam School of International Studies.
